Overview

Margate Soul Weekender is the United Kingdom’s definitive celebration of soul music, culture and community, staged across multiple venues on the Margate seafront in Kent. Established in its current form in 2010 and rooted in a lineage that reaches back to the early seventies soul gatherings at Winter Gardens, the event has become a town-wide street party that brings together generations of dancers, collectors, DJs and live performers.

The 2027 edition continues the format that made the Weekender iconic: a main beachside stage beneath the famous Lido sign at Newgate Lower Promenade, indoor club spaces, intimate cafes and late-night lounges, all linked by one wristband. The programme blends legendary live soul acts with world-class selectors playing across soul, funk, disco, rare groove, R&B, house and jazz. With its mix of seaside backdrop, heritage amusement architecture and community-led hospitality, Margate Soul Weekender offers an immersive cultural experience rather than a single-site festival. It is built by music and carried by the people who return each summer.

What Makes This Event Special

A Town-Wide Soul Culture: Unlike conventional festivals contained behind fences, Margate Soul Weekender spreads across more than twenty official venues including The Lido Complex, Olby’s Soul Cafe, Bar Nothing, The Drill Shed and the Lower Promenade beach stage. Each space has its own character and sound.

Seaside Sunset Stage: The main stage sits directly on Newgate Lower Promenade overlooking Margate Bay. Dancing on the beach as the sun sets over the chalk cliffs has become the signature visual of the event.

Community Roots: The Weekender was founded on rejection and resilience, created to celebrate Black British culture and soul music when mainstream spaces would not. That ethos of love, unity and friendship remains central to its organisation and audience.

Curated by Collectors: The lineup is curated with Street Sounds Radio and long-standing UK soul DJs who bring decades of crate-digging knowledge. The result is a rare balance of classic anthems and deep cuts you will not hear elsewhere.

Under The Cliffs Experience: An exclusive late-night beach lounge beneath Margate’s iconic white cliffs, reserved for weekend ticket holders, with premium bars, Caribbean and Creole street food and soulful Street Sounds DJs in an intimate setting.

Sustainability Focus: For 2027 the organisation continues its People, Place and Planet commitment to reduce impact on the beach and town, support local suppliers and respect the coastline that hosts the event.

Lineup / Featured Artists

The 2027 lineup follows the Weekender’s tradition of pairing iconic live headliners with an extensive roster of respected UK and international DJs. While the full 2027 artist announcement is released in phases through the official channels, the format mirrors the acclaimed 2025 and 2026 editions.

Live Headliners Expected Format: Previous editions have featured The S.O.S. Band, TMF Maze formerly Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Earth Wind & Fire Experience by Al McKay, The Drizabone Soul Family and Loose Ends. The 2027 edition will present three major live headline shows across the weekend on the beachside main stage, supported by special guest vocalists and full live bands.

DJ Lineup A-Z Tradition: The core DJ roster typically includes over 40 selectors. Returning names from recent years include Aitch B, Bobby & Steve, Dean Thatcher, DJ Destruction, DJ Swerve, Dr Bob Jones, Eddie Piller, Fraggle, Handson Family, Jo Mills, Lisa Loud, Marcia Carr, Operator, Paul French, Micky B, Vickie Vibe, Richio Suzuki, Terry Matthews, Sam Shelley, Mark Cookman, Jane E, Andy Jackson and Saxon Sound System. Expect rare groove, classic soul, funk, disco, soulful house and garage sets across day and night venues.

Live Performance Spaces: Daytime live soul and funk at The Lido, evening headline concerts at Lower Promenade, late-night vocal sessions at Olby’s and The Drill Shed, plus Roller Disco sessions at Atlantis with DJs from late morning.

Street Sounds Partnership: Street Sounds Radio provides curated stages, interviews and exclusive mixes, connecting the Weekender to its radio heritage and ensuring a deep soul education throughout the weekend.

Event Experience

The experience begins the moment you collect your wristband and step onto the promenade. During the day, the Lower Promenade functions as a free-flowing street party with food stalls, record sellers, vintage clothing markets and families enjoying the beach. The main stage runs afternoon headline sets where thousands dance on the sand.

As evening approaches, the town lights up. Venues within walking distance in the Old Town and seafront each host different sounds. You can move from a disco set at The Lido Complex to a rare groove session at a basement bar, then to a soulful house room at Bar Nothing. The atmosphere is notably friendly and multi-generational, with dedicated dance floors and plenty of seated social spaces.

After midnight, weekend ticket holders with reservations can access Under The Cliffs, the official late-night beach lounge. With limited capacity, low lighting, premium cocktails and selectors playing deeper, slower jams, it offers a contrast to the high-energy main rooms.

Beyond music, the Weekender includes daytime activities such as disco yoga, soul aerobics, vinyl digging fairs, talks on soul history and community art installations. The entire town participates, with local shops and cafes creating themed offerings that make Margate feel like a soul city for the duration of the event.

Location & Venue

The Weekender is centered at Newgate Lower Promenade, beneath the iconic Lido sign, Margate, Kent, CT9 1DD, England. The main beach stage and festival village occupy the lower promenade directly adjacent to Margate Bay and the Lido Complex at 1 Ethelbert Terrace, Cliftonville.

Official venues include Newgate Lower Promenade main stage, The Lido Complex indoor and outdoor stages, Olby’s Soul Cafe indoor venue, The Drill Shed, Odds Function Suite, Bar Nothing, Margate Beach Club and selected Old Town venues within a ten-minute walk. All wristbanded venues are walkable and signposted with shuttle stops connecting outer accommodation hubs.

The site offers sea views, level beach access, vintage amusement architecture and close proximity to Margate Old Town’s independent shops and galleries. There is no on-site camping, preserving the town-based accommodation model.

Event History

Margate’s relationship with soul music began in the early nineteen seventies when Winter Gardens hosted bank holiday soul all-nighters that drew soul boys and girls from across the south east to the Kent coast. That seaside soul tradition continued through various promoters and venues.

The modern Weekender traces to a founding partnership of Eli and Micky B, who ran Fort Hill Soul Weekend for three years before expanding into a town-wide event. Established in its current community-led form in 2010, the festival was renamed Margate Soul Festival in 2017 before returning to the Weekender identity that fans preferred.

Over twenty-five years of evolution, the event has hosted live legends, respected selectors, radio crews and generations of dancers. It moved to its now-famous beachfront location at Newgate Lower Promenade to accommodate growth and to celebrate the sunset backdrop. The 2026 edition marked its sustainability pledge and introduced Under The Cliffs as a permanent late-night beach lounge. Today it is regarded as the UK’s biggest soul music street party and a key fixture in the British soul calendar, known for its welcoming atmosphere and its role in championing soul culture and Black British musical heritage.

Thanet Wider Area: If Margate itself is full, consider Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Birchington, all connected via the shuttle bus. These towns offer additional hotels and B&Bs with easy shuttle access to the venues.

Accessibility: Several hotels near the Lido Complex offer accessible rooms and step-free access. Contact properties directly for specific access needs and request shuttle accessibility when booking shuttle passes.

Things to Do Before or After the Event

Turner Contemporary: Visit the world-renowned art gallery on the seafront, built on the site where JMW Turner stayed. Its exhibitions and rooftop views over the bay provide a cultural counterpoint to the music.

Dreamland Margate: Explore the heritage amusement park with vintage rides, roller disco and street food, located a short walk from the main stage. It frequently hosts Weekender after-shows and art installations.

Margate Old Town: Wander independent record shops, vintage stores, galleries and coffee shops. During the Weekender, Old Town becomes a fringe festival with buskers, pop-up soul shops and daytime DJ sets.

Margate Beach and Tidal Pool: Swim in the tidal pool or walk along the sandy beach and chalk cliffs. Morning walks to Botany Bay and Kingsgate Bay are popular with early risers.

Shell Grotto and Caves: Discover Margate’s mysterious Shell Grotto decorated with millions of shells, and the nearby Margate Caves for a unique underground history experience.

Broadstairs and Ramsgate: Take a short bus ride to neighbouring harbour towns for seafood, cliff-top walks and additional vintage shopping.

Restaurants & Dining Nearby

With over twenty venues participating, food is integral to the Weekender experience both inside and outside the festival footprint.

Inside the Festival Village: The Lower Promenade food village features Caribbean and Creole street food at Under The Cliffs, wood-fired pizza, vegan soul food, seafood shacks and premium bars with soul-inspired cocktails. The Lido Complex offers indoor dining with sea views.

Old Town Favourites: Olby’s Soul Cafe serves its own menu alongside soul music all day. Other highly regarded spots within walking distance include specialty coffee shops, Neapolitan pizza restaurants, modern British bistros and plant-based cafes along King Street and Market Place.

Seafront Dining: Along Marine Terrace and the Harbour Arm, you will find fish and chips, oyster bars, Italian and Indian restaurants and contemporary seafood restaurants using Thanet produce.

FAQ's

What is included with a weekend wristband at Margate Soul Weekender?

A weekend wristband gives you access to all official venues across Margate including the beachside main stage at Newgate Lower Promenade, The Lido Complex indoor and outdoor stages, Olby’s Soul Cafe indoor venue, The Drill Shed, Odds Function Suite, Bar Nothing and participating Old Town venues. It also makes you eligible to reserve a limited-capacity place at Under The Cliffs late-night beach lounge and to purchase official shuttle passes for travel across Thanet. Day tickets cover the same venues but only for the specific day printed on the ticket.

Is there camping or on-site accommodation at the festival site?

There is no on-site camping at Margate Soul Weekender. The event uses a town-based model that supports local hotels, guesthouses and self-catering apartments in Margate and neighbouring Thanet towns including Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Westgate-on-Sea and Birchington. The official shuttle bus connects these areas to the main venue each night. Booking accommodation early is strongly recommended as Margate fills quickly for the weekend.

Are children allowed and is the event accessible?

Children are welcome with appropriate tickets, with under 16 tickets at half price and under 14 requiring accompaniment by an adult at all times. The main beach stage and promenade have accessible viewing areas and level access routes, while some historic Old Town venues have limited step-free access due to building age. The organiser recognises Access Cards and provides accessibility information via the official website. Contact the box office in advance to discuss specific access requirements and shuttle accessibility.

How does the shuttle bus work and do I need it?

The official Margate Soul Weekender shuttle bus is designed to help you travel between accommodation hubs across Thanet and the official venues and then return after final sets. It is not essential if you are staying centrally within walking distance of Lower Promenade, but it is highly recommended for those staying in Broadstairs, Ramsgate or outer Margate areas and for late-night returns. Single day and weekend passes can be pre-booked online and at the Festival Box Office.

What kind of music can I expect beyond classic soul?

While classic and modern soul is at the heart of the Weekender, the programme is intentionally broad and curated with Street Sounds Radio to celebrate the full lineage of soul culture. You will hear funk, disco, rare groove, R&B, reggae, Latin soul, jazz, soulful house, garage and contemporary club soul across different venues. Live headline bands play timeless anthems, while specialist DJs dig deep into vinyl collections to create distinct atmospheres from beachside daytime sets to intimate late-night lounges.
